Video Game Associate Software Engineer

Andrew Hair, Rainbow Studios

Andrew Hair is the associate software engineer for Rainbow Studios, a video game company in Phoenix, Arizona.

What’s your story? How did you get here to Rainbow?

I went to Arizona State. I started at Rainbow Studios as an intern. I actually attended a career fair on campus and Rainbow was there looking to hire for full time positions. They weren’t looking for interns. I went over to their booth and introduced myself and ended up getting an internship. I was an intern for a year before they offered me the position I’m in today.

What did you learn in the internship?

I originally wanted to be a video game designer. But I found out through that internship experience that I enjoyed computer programming a lot better.

What’s the best part about working in video games?

When you walk into a store, I love seeing the game I worked on actually on the shelves. I love playing that game with my friends.

What’s your advice to someone looking to work in video games?

Networking is the most important thing. Our recruitment manager will tell you that it’s not what you know, but who you know. And to add on that, it’s also who knows you. Because a lot of the time, the hiring will start by internally bouncing around a position and seeing if anyone knows someone who could be right for the position. So networking is a big thing. You can do that at a career fair like I did, or go to a gaming conference or event to make contacts. Anything to put yourself out there, and get your name out there.
