Productive Daydreamer

May 29, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

Wake up from your dreams by following them. Don’t let responsibility wake you. Too often during our daily routine we are living in a dream before we are woken up by a co-worker asking us to do something. Or by an email that requires immediate attention. Or by a phone call. Or by, or by, or by.

Aren’t responsibilities like a useless dream catcher dangling from the dash? Our daily duties are consistently finding their way through that small, little hoop to abruptly wake us from our dreams.

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up in a different way?

Instead of a co-worker popping their head into your cube and asking for a favor, what if you woke yourself by having a plan of action on how you were going to materialize an idea? Or instead of being interrupted by an email, what if you prioritized your day so you would have time to dream?

I’m not daring you to dream. I’m assuming that you are a dreamer just like me. What I’m daring you to do is prioritize your dream, make time for it, and most importantly, make time to think about it.

Greg Bennett dreamed when he came across a creamy orange motel in small town Konocti. He dreamed that he would transform the hotel into a main attraction, and utilize its seldom used lake for water sports and a backdrop for amphitheatre concerts.

Pat Gallagher awoke from a dream wondering if he could fit a football field into AT&T Park, whose dimensions were designed solely for baseball. After measuring the field in its widest width, he found that the football field would fit by 2 yards. Now the privately financed park is host to the college football post season event, the Emerald Bowl, and hosts many other events, like concerts and extreme sports.

We also have two potential interviewees on our upcoming trip who dared to dream. One is the first quadriplegic to ever walk again. The other is a former maximum security inmate who is now a warden, and is dedicated to helping prisoners re-enter society sober.

How about that for dreaming?

There is always something that will hold you back from dreaming. Don’t let responsibility be your wake up call, but let it be your responsibility to wake yourself up.
