Warren Miller Delivers

Last night I had the privilege of attending a screening for Warren Miller’s new movie “Children of Winter” in Scottsdale and while it definitely started off on the wrong foot the event itself delivered in a big way.
For starters, I had two friends drive up from Tucson for the show. However, due to a lack of communication they misunderstood what the show was about, where we were sitting, where it the event was at and how much it cost to go. Needless to say they were slightly perterbed. Luckily with a few libations and some good conversation we were able to get them stoked again. Unfortunately when we arrived at the venue we found out it had been moved. Brutal. The last ditch effort to make it to the new venue before the show started and a door price that was lower than we had paid for advanced tickets didn’t help the case. So there we sat pissed off and surly waiting for the show to start.
In spite of all the complications… the show was rad. The MC did a decent job, the crowd was OK, but the product itself, the movie, was unreal. It made me realize, that as much as we worry about the package and presentation, if you create real value in the product all the other stuff becomes almost superfluous. It was the movie that made the show worth the price of admission and left us satisfied in a way that made my gripes seem superficial and petty.
There has been so much talk about the future of media. How do you reach an audience with so much choice? Is this the end of television or cinema? How will people experience video? The first step is creating something that people want to watch. If you build it, they will come.
Now if only I could capture the intensity of high altitude heli-skiing on a 60 degree face in our Pursue the Passion video’s…
